Harper's Cafe'

Harper’s Café is one of Malacca’s best known restobars. Serving up an excellent (though limited) menu of Malay-European fusion fare, its focus is on its seafood selections. Elegant and breezy, the upstairs bar/lounge commands excellent views of the Malacca River. The restaurant’s service can be slow but it is one of the few places in Malacca reminiscent of the airy cafes so common in KL. The café has a very laid back, New Orleans’ vibe with simple décor: dark wood floors, cosy chairs, tables set right beside large French windows almost touching the river, with decorative ceiling fans and chandeliers.

Though the food at Harper’s Café is slightly expensive, the flavour factor goes a long way in making up for its price tag. The restaurant’s first-rate chefs dish out surprisingly good fare and if you pick the right table you can even watch them in action. There is a massive wooden bar to the right of the main dining hall that dominates the room: beyond are tables with views of the river. If the weather is clement, you can snag a spot on the outdoor deck putting you within touching distance of the water.

For mains, stuffed chicken breast sautéed in a leek-and-mushroom sauce is a good choice: the sauce is super creamy and cheesy. Another great mains dish is pepper-crusted chicken breast with creamy polenta. If you are in the mood to try Harper’s Café’s seafood selection then go for the Japanese-style baked salmon with baba ganoush and pickled zucchini or sample the red snapper. Harper’s wine collection is extensive with a good variety of labels available to go with your meal.
