Kedai Kopi Chung Wah

Malacca is known as a food haven, as people flock from all over Malaysia to the UNESCO World Heritage city for the best, only-in-Malacca dishes. One of the Malacca’s most celebrated dishes is chicken rice balls, and at Kedai Kopi Chung Wah, a coffee shop specializing in this delight, it is serious business. With lines of eager diners outside the property throughout its opening hours, Chung Wah is immensely popular, and for all the right reasons. Conveniently located in Jonker Walk, Kedai Kopi Chung Wah sits right opposite the giant San Shu Gong outlet, at the end of the row of shop lots at Jalan Hang Jebat. Interior-wise, the eatery embraces the Malaysian-style coffee shop decor – wooden chairs and marble-top tables occupy the floor space, with hawker stalls being used as workstations where food is prepared.

With such a simple interior, Chung Wah’s food takes centre stage, and has done so ever since the restaurant first opened its doors. Chicken rice balls is the only item in the menu, and don’t try to get cocky with the choices of chicken, either. They only serve steamed chicken, together with its super soft rice balls, and flavoursome chilli sauce. Chicken rice balls are an ideal dish to be had at any time of the day (even breakfast!), as the restaurant opens at 07:30 to cater to the morning crowd, only closing at 15:00 for those who would like an extended lunch break.

As with a lot of local eats, prices are inexpensive with a plate of five balls, steamed chicken and drinks going for about RM11 per person. The ordering process is uncomplicated, too – just state the number of persons and the amount of chicken (half or whole chicken), and you will be served almost immediately. We recommend you to move along right after you have finished, giving your table up to people who are queuing right under the blazing sun for a plate!
