Limau-Limau Café is a surprising find in Malacca. Though the place has received rave reviews it has managed to fly under the radar, with most people stumbling upon the place on their Jonker Walk explorations. A kooky bistro with a definite upmarket ambiance, it is set opposite Kampung Kling Mosque. The breezy bistro has blindingly-bright acid green walls – (limau means lime in Malay). Soft jazz music and ice cold pints make it a favourite spot to while the afternoon away: in fact a lot of its customers seem reluctant to leave when their food and drinks are finished.
Artfully contrasting with the old Chinese store fronts flanking it, Limau-Limau Café is full of character and features a quirky mix of furnishings and fixtures. Besides the vivid wall colour choice, the place is further made unforgettable by its collection of whimsical art pieces by local artists and mismatched mirrors on the walls. All of this contrasts beautifully with the colourful, kitschy bric-a-brac (aroma burners, decorative art and aromatherapy incense for sale) scattered about and the dazzling mishmash of chandeliers hanging from the ceiling. Dramatic yet cosy, at night when the quirky chandeliers are lit is the best time to see the café at its finest hour.
While the ambiance and atmosphere at Limau Limau Café is fantastic, the reasonably priced, western-based menu does not fare too badly either. There is a selection of pastas on offer but the array of inventive sandwiches comes highly recommended: try the mango and chicken foccacia or dragon fruit and chicken sandwich. Meanwhile there is also a range of pancake offerings and undeniably popular are the banana pancakes drizzled with honey and served with two huge scoops of vanilla ice cream. Drinks available include 100% fruit blends (including lychee and lemon, apple and asam boi, dragon fruit and lychee, plus lots more) as well as a delicious selection of coffees and teas. A non-smoking joint, the bar at Limau-Limau Café has a variety of beers on tap and beside the food, delicious drinks and decadent décor, Limau-Limau Café deserves a thumbs-up for its service.
