The Baboon House is a quaint cafe in Malacca that impresses thanks to its authentic gourmet burgers, freshly ground coffee and laidback atmosphere. With a tranquil open-air courtyard, spacious seating arrangements and eclectic furnishings, this place certainly isn’t short on personality. Situated in Jalan Tun Tan Cheng Lock, the peaceful and cosy environment of The Baboon House is in pleasant contrast to the busy lanes of Jonker Street outside. This unique cafe-cum-art gallery offers a welcome rest bite from the day’s heat – particularly if you’ve been trudging through the narrow and crowded alleyways of the surrounding area all day. Whilst waiting to be served, there a few serene spots to sit back, unwind and enjoy a quiet moment by reading a book, browsing a magazine or inspecting the various crafts decorating the walls. This eatery is also pet-friendly with the owner’s adorable dog and cat both wandering about and (occasionally) greeting guests at the entrance.
Offering delicious burgers and sandwiches with homemade chicken, beef and pork patties, portions served at The Baboon House are slightly bigger than most burger joints – perfect if you’ve worked up a big appetite after a day’s sightseeing. On weekends, you can indulge in their freshly baked muffins or sip on some ultra creamy Vietnamese drip-coffee for a great pick-me-up before resuming your exploration of Jonker Street and its many antique shops. A definite must-try at The Baboon House is its signature Baboon Beef Burger (RM14.80). The juicy and tender beef patty is complemented well with a delicious sauce that brings out the fragrance of the beef patty with hint of spiciness. Next is the Oriental Chicken Burger, which comes with wedges, onion rings and all your usual garnishing. At RM13.80, it’s much better value for value for money compared to many other burger joints in the city. The Baboon Green Salad is yet another treat, sinfully topped with strips of pork bacon and chicken. Priced at RM13.50, guests can also opt for extra feta cheese for an additional RM2.50. Although the same price as the burgers, the salad is massive, so sharing is encouraged. The decent drinks list at The Baboon House ranges from fresh juices and smoothies, to coffee and alcoholic beverages. Best of all, each hot tea and coffee comes with a piece of Danish butter cookie for a sweet treat. For an absolute thirst quencher though, we recommend the icy cool mango smoothie – a perfect remedy for Malacca’s scorching climate.
